Essential for car maintenance workers: List of commonly used car maintenance tools
Jun 24,2025
When repairing cars, we all need tools such as jacks, hammers, wrenches, pliers, towing ropes, etc. Although we usually use it, have you truly understood them? Now, let's take a look at the functions of commonly used car repair tools!
1、 Car repair hammer
Car maintenance workers usually use iron hammers. There are two types of iron hammers: round headed hammers and horizontal headed hammers. One end of the round headed hammer is cylindrical, the other end is circular cap shaped, and the size at the middle where the handle is installed is relatively large. The shape of a horizontal hammer is round on one end and flat on the other. The model of a hammer is determined by the mass of the hammer head itself, such as a 0.5kg hammer, which means the mass of the hammer head is 0.5 kg. Depending on the needs of the job, car maintenance workers generally equip several models of hammers.
When using a hammer, the following points should be noted:
1. The connection between the hammer head and handle must be firm. Any loose hammer head and handle, as well as any splitting or cracking of the handle, must not be used. The hammer head and handle should be wedged in the installation hole, preferably with a metal wedge. The length of the wedge should not exceed 2/3 of the depth of the installation hole.
2. In order to have some elasticity when striking, the middle and top of the handle should be slightly narrower than the end.
3. When using a sledgehammer, attention must be paid to front and back, left and right, up and down. It is strictly prohibited to stand within the range of movement of the sledgehammer, and it is not allowed to use a sledgehammer and a small hammer to strike each other.
4. Hammer heads are not allowed to be quenched, and there should be no cracks or burrs. If burrs or burrs are found, they should be promptly repaired.
2、 Car maintenance wrench
A wrench is a commonly used tool for folding bolts and nuts with sharp edges. The commonly used wrenches for car repair include open-end wrenches, ring wrenches, socket wrenches, flexible wrenches, torque wrenches, pipe wrenches, and special wrenches. You can purchase a set of combination wrench sets, with various models available for replacement, making it convenient for use in different occasions.
3、 Car jack
The car jack is placed in the toolbox of the car and is used to lift the body when replacing the spare tire. Due to the different body weights of different vehicle models, jacks with different load-bearing capacities are required to cooperate with tire replacement. Car jacks include pneumatic jacks, electric jacks, hydraulic jacks, and mechanical jacks, with hydraulic and mechanical jacks being commonly used.
When using a jack, pay attention to the following issues:
1. Secure the vehicle securely. Before lifting the car with a jack, we need to first secure the car to prevent it from becoming unstable and falling down, causing injury to people.
2. Don't forget to take safety warning measures. After parking the vehicle, we cannot ignore the necessary safety warning measures and should place the warning triangle at a safe distance behind the vehicle.
3. Pay attention to fixing the bottom of the jack. When using a jack, we must pay attention to the ground conditions and try to choose a suitable ground for fixing the jack for operation. If the car is on soft ground and we cannot find a sturdy and flat road surface to fix the jack, we can place a large and hard support under the jack, such as wooden boards, floor tiles, iron plates, etc., to assist in fixing the jack to the ground.
4. Pay attention to the maximum load-bearing capacity of the jack. Each jack has its load-bearing limit, which is indicated on the jack's label. Before using a jack, we must understand the maximum load-bearing capacity and the working limit of the jack.
5. Aim at the vehicle chassis support points. There are support points on both sides of the vehicle chassis near the wheels for the jack to come into contact with. The lifting part of the jack must be supported on the chassis support point, otherwise it is difficult to fix the vehicle, and it is also easy to damage the jack and even the chassis.
6. It's safer to put a spare tire under the car. After lifting the vehicle, don't rush to remove the wheel hub screws. The most important thing is to take safety measures. Before replacing the spare tire, we may as well place it under the car. In case the jack cup is damaged, there will still be a spare tire to cushion the car when it falls down.
7. The lifting operation should be stable and slow. The jacks equipped with the vehicle are not "thick and hard" goods, their strength is only enough to support the vehicle itself. If we use too much force during lifting operations, the jack is easily deformed and unusable.
4、 Car maintenance pliers
There are many types of pliers, including wire pliers, pointed nose pliers, angled nose pliers, eagle beak pliers, snap ring pliers, flat mouth pliers, carp pliers, pipe pliers, flat mouth pliers, round mouth pliers, etc. The commonly used car repair tools include lithium pliers, pointed nose pliers, clamp pliers, throat clamp pliers, etc. Carp pliers are used to hold flat or cylindrical parts by hand, and those with cutting edges can cut through metal. Sharp nose pliers are used to grip parts in narrow areas. Be careful not to use pliers to turn bolts or nuts, do not use them as pry bars, and do not use them as hammers.
Instructions for using pliers:
The use of pliers is operated with the right hand. Turn the jaws inward for easy control of the cutting area. Use your little finger to extend between the two pliers handles to press against them and open the pliers head. This way, the pliers handles can be separated flexibly. Do not use pliers as hammers. Regularly dropping a drop of protective oil on the polished surface and joint of the pliers can keep them in good working condition, thereby extending their service life.
5、 Spark plug socket
Spark plug socket is a specialized tool used for manual disassembly and assembly of spark plugs. During use, different heights and radial sizes of spark plug sockets are selected according to the assembly position of the spark plug and the size of the spark plug hexagon. The commonly used sleeves are 8mm, 10mm, and 12mm (depending on the vehicle model) for removing engine covers, throttle valves, and other nuts. When disassembling spark plugs, the spark plug sleeve should be aligned before turning to prevent the sleeve from slipping.
6、 Car repair screwdriver
A screwdriver, also known as a screwdriver, screwdriver, or screwdriver, is a tool used to tighten or loosen slotted screws. It is divided into a straight screwdriver and a cross screwdriver. A straight screwdriver is designed to ensure torque resistance, while a cross screwdriver can distribute force more evenly. Screwdrivers are divided into manual screwdrivers and electric screwdrivers according to their power sources. Be careful not to use a screwdriver as a chisel or a pry bar. The blade of a high-quality screwdriver is made of spring steel with relatively high hardness. A good screwdriver should be hard but not brittle, with a smooth texture.
Specification of commonly used screwdriver models:
Star shaped hexagon: T3, T4, T5, T6, T7, T8, T9, T10 (phones that can remove almost all hexagon screws)
M-shaped (U-shaped, fork shaped): M2.6 (the most commonly used U-shaped screwdriver specification)
Y-shaped (triangle): Y2.0, Y3.0 (Y-shaped screw for mobile phones, smart phones, seat chargers, etc., universal)
▲ Type: 2.0, 2.3 (Remove some triangular screws, rarely used, but spare is still necessary)
★ Type: 1, 2 (special pentagonal screw phones can also be disassembled)
Cross: 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 3.0 (used for PSP, MP4, MP3, digital, etc.)
One word: 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 3.0 (clock series)
Inner hexagon: H1.5, H2.0, H2.5, H3.0, H4, etc
Screwdrivers do not have round heads because round heads do not twist at all. One character is meant to ensure a twist, while a cross can distribute force more evenly. According to the power source, there are manual screwdrivers and electric screwdrivers; According to the batch head or blade head, there are a single character and a cross.
